Fake Furniture for the Future Family (2019-2020)
Fake Furniture for the Future Family project is a series of life-size cardboard mockups of domestic furniture. I declared myself a mother of the future family by building nonfunctional furniture out of cardboard; one loveseat, a round table for six people, a bunch of stools, and nine sets of nightstands. The future family achieves "physicality" as a simulacrum in this project by projection on the fake furniture. The representative scale, the form, or the material triggers the viewers' expectations of their functions. However, the vulnerability of the material makes the viewers resist appropriate them.
The fake objects replace actual, precious items, just like life-size cardboard mock-ups of sculptures that curators use to design an exhibition. The destiny of the mock-up sculpture is to be replaced by the real one. They never substitute authentic sculptures but generate many ideas. By making l fake objects for family events, I simulate my future family in my mind. What I earn from the simulacrum is how to invite my family to my body as they are.
